"The video is about how the Hubble telescope stared into a completely empty part of the sky for 10 days to photograph galaxies 87 billion light years away. It picked this part of the sky because they didn’t want any interference from stars in our own galaxy. They had no idea what the telescope would see and spent millions of dollars for the project (which could turn up with nothing!) It’s a good thing they took the chance."

The only reason I refer to myself as a pantheist rather than a shaman is that I don't have the cultural basis to do so. I've had no formal training in shamanism, have not met any shamans, and so I would not want to offend any through a misapplication of my beliefs/talents.

But pantheism as I understand is not a global spirital entity. All animate (all types of animals) and inanimate (rocks, trees, etc) objects possess individual spiritual energy. There are also the spirits of the dead and the "gods" and other unattached spirits, etc.
it's ok.
i know it is a little unclear, but it got you in here, didn't it?

So i agree with the newer findings of science that say that the smallest part of ALL molcules are quantum particles. So all of those particles all together would be a mathmatical object called a wave function. The word Aeon is the expansive devine everything. i use aeonic wave function to describe the collection of everyquantum particle in all of existance.

So if these particles make up even air electricity and light every cell in every living thing and all of the molecules of every nonliving thing, then they make up and move create and are everything.

This to my understanding is the concept of what is personified into forms like men or animals to be called some God or diety.

The fractal breakdown of multidieties religions so like that of our multiverses, universes, galaxies, worlds countries communities humans tissies muscles cells molecules and so on until you get to the smallest bit. which is the very same as all of it.

When I read about it last summer I thought "Oh. So that's what I am!" and I was kinda excited by that... but there doesn't seem to be much discussion about it anywhere. Probably because of its nature: the fact that the Universe is God and everything is equally sacred tends to neutralize the polarity needed to discuss something.

So I'll ask a couple questions of you more experienced folks:

What do you do to keep this from being a stagnant belief system?

Am I right in interpreting the positive or negative energy I put out into the world as changing the world, and therefore changing God for better or worse?

How do you as Pantheists deal with the prospect of dying? The soul? I'm hoping if I let go with peace and love that will be the energy that returns to the collective unconscious. (No... I'm not dying, I'm in the prime of my life)

I would love to hear your opinions.

Brahman is not an un-minded Being and there is room for gods, spirits, and other such beings within a pantheist framework.

Term(s):
1. I will use Brahman as a name for the underlying Substance of the manifold of the universe. “Es” is a good term, but it deeply violates the “I-Thou” relationship, and I am definitely going to argue for an aware Substance (as opposed to the un-minded Being often purported by some pantheists) as well as room for multiple Gods within the pantheist framework (in response to Candace's topic).

2. Substance is the substrate of phenomena (things or events): it is that on which things are dependent for their existence. Brown does not exist on its own. It must exist through something else (say wood) which is then it's substance.
3. Attribute is the essential quality of a substance. Extension is the essential quality of matter, and thought the essential quality of mind.
4. Accident (mode) is a secondary quality of a substance: this or that shape, this or that color. It is necessary for a substance to have accidents, but not ( on the face of it) necessary as too which one (unlike attribute which is necessary).

Thesis: Since all existing things are manifest of Brahman as actual and all possible things are contained within (or manifest of) Brahman as potential, then all gods, demons, angles and other such things are a part of Brahman in so far as they are potential or actual. Since mind and awareness are actual, then these too must be a part of Brahman and a part of the pantheist framework. *Indeed, when pantheists deny a “minded” God/Being/Substance/Brahman they separate Brahman from part of the universe and stand in stark contradiction to their own basic tenant.*

(A re-hash of Spinoza): Since a substance is contained within itself it can be demonstrated that “there can be only one.” Given the audience I leave it granted that there is a substance at all. Since all things exists through themselves or through another, all things are either substance, attribute of a substance, or mode of a substance. Since there is only one substance all other things (the manifold of the universe) must be modes or attributes of the One (Brahman). Followers of Samsara will recognize the “Curds From Milk” model here. Since all we know in the universe is either body or mind (probably also spirit and maybe soul as distinct from mind), mind is one of the primary accidents of Brahman: it is an attribute of Brahman. Brahman is far from a mindless “Es” (at least not in its manifested form...and certainly the divita school would hold that it is mind which sets off samsara in the first place)

As for spirits, we must first define what a spirit is, and then show that such a being is not a contradiction. In the end, we find that spirits are no less real and separate from Brahman than anything else in the manifold, but we must remember the ultimate tenant that the manifold is not the real-ly real: it is the dream of Brahman. In this regard there are no spirits, but then also is there no you and I.

Okay, a spirit, as I see it, is life force. It perhaps has some cosmological connection to mind, but more likely the view of spirits as having personalities or being aware are a matter of a connection of life force to emotion. I leave the cosmological relationship between mind, emotion, spirit, and soul for another time, as I am truthfully not wholly ready to answer that question. We leave spirit as life force, as at least an accident of mind. This gives them the same ontological status as you and I.

We can perceive something as having a life force (even a rock or the weather, but I won't go into that here, but think Jung), and note that it has this or that particular spirit. This discrimination is a necessary function of mind (as the process of expanding and contracting the manifold).

Gods are a bit more difficult, well the monotheist, omnipotent, omnipresent God is problematic as such in the pantheist framework. The problem is the such a God is necessary and absolute as is Brahman. It is generally given that you cannot have two necessary beings in one universe, and certainly you cannot have two necessary and absolute beings in one universe, they become identical. This would not be such a problem, except that generally speaking, christians are not willing to admit the identity of myself and my computer with God. They are even generally willing to say that I and my computer are *part* of God. The impetus of this position comes from the “analogy of being” argument posited by St. Aquinus, which states that God (as nec. & abs.) has a qualitatively different kind of being than we do. (c.f. Abelard “univocal being”) .

Gods with a lower case 'g', are not absolute or necessary. The are usually not even omnipotent, and are sometimes even mortal. This makes them again an accident of mind, body, and/or some other essential attribute of Brahman. In the end, they too are identical with Brahman and have a place in the pantheist framework. (I apologize for the crappy cosmology here. There is probably something which makes them ontologically greater than you and I, but the standard “substance, attribute, accident” model fails me here, and my mind is sluggish tonight to solve the issue).

The only issue remaining is to show that “potential” things, such as unicorns and Diana as merely potential are “in a substance,” that is part of Brahman (I'm not saying Diana is not actual, but that she must be at least possible to be actual, so I am looking only that far here).

There is some debate as too whether substance or form (attribute in our case) carries the potential. Early Aristotle held the potential to be carried in the form. An egg has the potential to become chicken but not rock (matter, carried privation, and could become chicken, rock, or whatever). This works fine on a limited scale, that is with chickens and fenders, it begins to fail when you start expanding your extension. Grass does not, of its own, have the potential to become cow, but when a cow eats it, it becomes cow. This lead to the positing of prime matter, and I think, to Aquinus' view of potential being carried in the matter (if memory servers). When we move to the level of Brahman we must move towards Augustine's “rational seeds,” the manifold of the universe in potential carried in the mind of God (again if memory serves).

Conclusion: In the end it is a matter of perspective. If you are currently viewing Brahman as the unified One of the universe, then you are not viewing the manifold of the universe and gods, spirits, you, and I as particulars don't have any existence in this view. This is to say, from this partial perspective of pantheism gods and spirits don't have any place in the system, but then neither do you, I, or any part of nature. If you look at the manifold as part(s) of Brahman, then gods and spirits have at least the same ontological status as you or I. They are a part of the universe. In the end, both views are valid and should be taken (paradoxically) together. As for mind, it is an essential and necessary part of Brahman and likely exists even within the “unified” view of the One.

If Brahman has as part of its essence mind, then it is aware (c.f. Hegel' s process of existence is the Absolute's becoming aware of itself).

NOTE: I should have look up more things (too many “if memory serves” for my comfort).

I started this tribe because I didn't see any other listing for Pantheism here. I want this to be a very informal place where people can come and talk about all things related to Pantheism - whether that be similarities to Paganism, Shamanism, Buddhism, Shinto or other religions, or perhaps how you practice Pantheism.

For myself, I hold a very ecclectic view of spirituality, and have come to this point via many other religious practices. I find the belief in Everything is Divine and the Divine is Everything suits the way I view the world perfectly.

Anyway - I should introduce myself a bit :) I'm Discordia and I am a 29 year-old mother of one (a beautiful baby boy called Phoenix Song.) I live in the midwest - although I am originally from England. I am Design Director for a web design company and love the fact that I can work from home!

Okay - who's next?

I have thought a lot about being a pantheist. Not only does it allow me to see the divine in everything, but it allows me to pick and choose what I like from other traditions and faiths and leave behind the mutual exclusivity and evangelism of organized religion.
